As we ring in the new year, have you decided to tweak your life for the better? Resolutions can run the gamut of being achievable to ridiculous, however, most of these would often include “being more healthy.” We may all be well aware of the health benefits that wine has, but it seems that it has something better to offer this year! So better pencil it in your list for this year.
Fads and resolutions have two things in common – it’s only easy to follow through at first. But when it comes to wine, it’s hard not to keep up. This is why this health resolution everybody has been raving about might be easier for you.
The Sirtfood Diet
This diet sounds rather odd than it is edible and inviting, but it has been raking a lot of attention lately especially among people who wants to be healthy but still get the yummy stuff. The Sirtfood Diet includes blueberries, green tea, soy, parsley, walnuts, capers, turmeric, kale, apples, chilli and extra virgin olive oil. But what kept people do a double take is the inclusion of dark chocolate and red wine
It seems like something you’d get from a date, but these foods which are referred to as “sirt rich foods” gives you something better than butterflies in your stomach. These work by activating proteins inside the body called sirtuins, also called the Holy Grail in promoting good health and longevity. These are said to create the same effects of fasting and exercise, which speeds up weight loss and also reverse the effects of junk food.
The Sirtfood diet is a growing movement that is brought to the limelight by two nutritionists, Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, who wrote the book by the same name – The Sirtfood Diet. The authors put their healthy eating programme to a trial on 40 gym-goers in a health club where both are consultants. Each of the participants reportedly lost 7 pounds in seven days and also experienced higher energy levels.
The sirtfood diet has made converts from a lot of high-profile figures both in sports and the food industry. Famous names include Olympic gold-medallist Sir Ben Ainslie, heavyweight boxer David Haye, and BBC celebrity chef and model, Lorraine Pascale.
Other supportive studies
There are also other studies which showed that sirtuin lengthened the lifespan of male mice by 15.8%. It is also linked to creating a healthier metabolism in mice that are fed a high-fat diet. Another prospective cohort study also supports this with 275,000 men as subjects. Those who consumed one or two drinks a day had a significantly reduced mortality rate from heart disease.
Sirtuins are found to selectively regulate the activity of many key genes that are responsible for reproduction, metabolism, cell defense and many other functions. Certain activators are needed to bring about the desired results. The particular activator needed is resveratrol, which is a polyphenol found in red wine, particularly pinot noir, and dark chocolate with at least 85% cocoa. So for those who are a sucker for these two, then you now have more reasons to love it.
A glass of wine equals a workout?
In another news, a research conducted by the University of Alberta in Canada found that the health benefits of resveratrol are similar to those which you can get from exercise. Resveratrol has been known to improve physical performance, heart health, and muscle strength, in the same way that they are improved during gym sessions.
The study does not suggest that it can replace exercise, but rather it only further proves the benefits of wine in your diet. Resveratrol mimics the exercise or improve the benefits even for the modest amount of exercise an individual can manage. However, the key detail here is to keep it in moderation. A glass of wine is all it takes to prevent dementia, to ward of cancer, to promote heart health, and regulate blood sugar levels.
The secret is in the right numbers
Studies have also shown that excessive consumption of these sirtuin-rich foods can undermine the positive effects. That would be another good thing to add to your list of resolutions. In the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, it was stressed that adults who wish to drink alcohol should keep in moderation. It defines it to be up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks for men. This is further specified to 5 oz (50 ml) of wine.
Which wines to choose
When it comes to quality, they say that “the deeper, the better.” In choosing red wine, the deeper the colour, the better because this also means that there it contains a higher antioxidant count. The best amounts are found in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chianti.
So drink to your health! Don’t be a guzzler, but take a more conservative approach to your alcohol consumption. Red wine, in particular, can get you the range of benefits on top of the great taste and experience.
